Festo Electric Rotary Actuators

Electric Rotary Actuators from Festo enable conversion of electrical power into precise rotational motion, offering an electromechanical alternative to pneumatic rotary drives. Designed for simple swivel tasks, indexing tables or as rotary axes in multi-axis machines, the range includes modules with stepper or servo motors, integrated gearboxes, encoders and optional features such as holding brakes or through-shafts.

These actuators provide high repeatability, compact installation, and flexible rotation angles, making them suitable for assembly lines, pick-and-place systems, rotary conveyors and compact rotary indexing tables.

Important: Electric rotary actuators provide precise angular control, integrated drive and feedback, and a compact footprint—making them perfect for automated rotary motion where accuracy and space are critical.

Design & Functionality

  • The actuator combines a motor (stepper or servo) and gearbox in a single compact housing along with integrated encoder feedback.
  • Key design features include:
Integrated encoder and closed-loop operation (“ServoLite”) allowing highly accurate positioning.
Backlash-free pre-loaded rotating plate or gearbox to ensure precise motion and minimal error.
High torque output and robust bearing arrangements, suitable for heavy loads and demanding environments.
Compact mounting footprint with multiple interfaces, enabling integration as a rotary axis in handling systems.
  • With these features, Festo’s electric rotary actuators offer “plug and work” commissioning, high repeat accuracy and wide application range.

Important: The integrated drive, encoder and gear unit deliver drive-ready rotation control, reducing external components, wiring and setup complexity.

Total Crossed Beams

(Concept adapted to complete angular range and operational coverage)

  • The actuator supports full rotational tasks—whether set angles (90°, 180°) or infinite rotation depending on model.
  • The internal mechanical coupling ensures consistent motion throughout the rotation, enabling tight tolerance angular positioning and high repeatability.

Beam Pitch Options

(Translated as torque/size/angle variants)

  • Various sizes available, for example: size 12, size 16, size 25, size 32 in the ERMO series.
  • Torque classes range from ~0.15 Nm (small size) up to several Nm depending on configuration.
  • Mounting variants accommodate fixed rotation angles or infinite rotation, holding brakes, hollow shafts for cable feed-through, and IO-Link or digital I/O.
Important: The broad range of sizes, torques and rotation angles ensures the actuator can be tailored to both light-duty precision tasks and high-load rotary axes.

Intrinsic Synchronism

  • The internal motor-gearbox-encoder combination ensures synchronized rotational output and position feedback without external synchronisation hardware.
  • Enables straightforward integration, reliable control loops and reduces drift or mis-alignment over time—ideal for multi-axis systems or precision indexing.

Operational Advantages

  • Precise angular motion and high repeatability for indexing, turning, aligning.
  • Compact design with integrated drive reduces footprint and external components.
  • Wide flexibility in torque, speed, and rotation angle to cover many applications.
  • Simplified commissioning, often “plug and work” without software configuration.
  • Applications: Rotary tables, indexing units, assembly cells, gantry systems requiring rotary axes, handling systems, part orientation in packaging.
